Week of October 16

This week is conference week. I look forward to meeting with you during our conference time/day (which you received from your homeroom teachers). Please bring any questions/concerns you would like to discuss. Also remember, this week is early release all week. Know how your student is going home.

In each subject, our focus will be:

Math:

2nd grade: Word problems using addition and subtraction

3rd grade: Word problems using addition, subtraction, and multiplication. Please have your child practice multiplication facts. This could be done through song, videos, or flashcards. You can google multiplication facts.

Reading:

2nd grade: We will be looking at a program called Raz Kids. Another good program is called Starfall. You can have your child go to www.starfall.com from your computers at home. We will be working on reading through independent reading and small group with me.

3rd grade: We have started looking at the program Read 180/System 44. The students and I are very excited and can’t wait to get started in the program! They will also be able to access from home! More to come later on this.

Language Arts:

Our writing focus this quarter is on expository/informational writing. We will begin with How to… writing. In addition, we will focus on adjectives and adverbs.

Week of October 9, 2017

Hopefully you have the time and day of our conferences. I look forward to speaking with you. Please feel free to bring any questions and concerns.

I am very excited that my all of my students will be working on new reading programs.

Math:

We will work on numbers and counting– counting beyond 100, counting backwards and skip-counting

Reading:

We will emphasize asking and answering questions, especially the wh- questions. We will also work on phonics- particularly long vowel sounds.

Writing:

After finishing narrative writing for now, we will be moving into expository/informational writing

Week of October2, 2017

I hope everyone had a nice break. Now that testing is over, we are ready to head full-force into our day.

Please be on the look-out for a letter about conferences. We look forward to meeting and talking with you regarding your child’s progress, as well as any questions you may have.

We will begin centers this week. There will be 3 20 minute rotations in Math and Reading.

During the independent work time, we will be focusing on practice of skills, but mainly goals and objectives.

I am very excited about working like this.

Math:

2nd grade: coins and problem solving

3rd grade: multiplication and problem solving

Reading:

Soon, we will begin a new program called System 44- this program will hone in on phonics, which will help your child read better.

We will focus on word work and phonics rules. However, we will also look at the differences among prose (regular text), poetry, and drama.

Language Arts:

We will focus on the 4 different types of sentences and writing a narrative

Week of September 18, 2017

I hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Third graders: We will be finishing the IOWA on Monday and Tuesday.

All: We will be back to a regular schedule on Wednesday.

Ms. Begora’s students, remember that your Native American projects are due on Monday.

Math:

We will be working on subtraction.

Reading:

We will be working on long vowel sounds and making connections when we are reading. We will be having groups for Guided Reading.

Language Arts:

We will work on pronouns and writing a narrative paragraph, given a prompt.

Week of September 11, 2017

Cobb County is watching the weather. Please check the Cobb County website.

We will be testing 3rd and 5th grade for IOWA.

Math:

We will be working on subtraction.

Reading:

We will be having guided reading and work on main idea.

Language Arts:

We will continue with narrative writing and verbs and sentences.

Social Studies:

We will continue with the Native American regions.

Week of September 5, 2017

Remember, Monday is Labor Day. Therefore, there is no school. We will see your child on Tuesday.

Tuesday will be a regular day

CoGat will be Wednesday, Sept. 6-8

IOWA will be Sept. 11-14. September 15 is make-up for students who are absent.

Please make sure your child gets a good night’s rest each night and eats a good breakfast. However, we do not want your child stressed. He/she should just try his/her best.

Social Studies unit: Native Americans

Week of August 28, 2017

I cannot believe we have been in school almost a month! This school year has started off very well, and I am looking forward to continuing helping the students continuing their growth!

Remember that Monday, Sept. 4 is Labor Day. Therefore we will have a 3-Day weekend this coming weekend.

Wednesday, August 30 will be an Early Release day- students will be released at 12:30. Please remember to send a note to the homeroom teacher if they are going home differently.

August 31 begins IOWA and Cogat testing.

Math:

We will be focusing on addition and subtraction

Reading:

Our focus for reading will be asking and answering questions, particularly using the 5W & H questions

English/Language Arts:

We will be focusing on learning the writing process and working on character development. Additionally, we will focus on learning pronouns.

We will always work on spelling.

Week of Aug. 21, 2017

What an exciting day! It is here! Today is the eclipse. Please remember that dismissal has been extended today to 3pm due to the eclipse.  Your child can only go outside if we have a permission slip from you to go outside. If not, he/she will watch the live stream. If you choose, you also may take your child out early.

This week is picture day.

This week, we will be learning:

Math:

We will continue place value and discuss how to write numbers. We will also discuss rounding numbers.

Reading:

As a class, we will be reading Charlotte’s Web. In addition, we will be starting our guided reading groups. Your child will be given a specific reading strategy to work on. Please know what it is so you can work on it at home during your reading time.

Language Arts:

We will be working on plural nouns, capitalization and writing good sentences.

Week of Aug. 14, 2017

This week, our focus will be:

Math:

Place value and number sense– this will guide us in to adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers

Reading:

We will continue to learn reading strategies, as well as be able to tell beginning, middle and end of a story. Please encourage your child to choose books at their level.

Language Arts:

We are learning the elements of a story (characters, setting, problem, solution), as well as nouns and which nouns get capitalized. Moreover, we will work on spelling patterns and writing skills with a focus on Narratives.

Social Studies:

We will focus on map skills

Hopefully, your child has gotten back into the groove of being back at school. We had a great first week and I am very happy to be working with your child. We will be working hard this year! So far, I have spent time getting to know your son/daughter.
