I can’t believe how quickly this year is flying.

This week, we are going to spend time assessing and checking on how students are doing to see what skills/areas we will concentrate on.

Math:

Continue reading and discussing books at home

# Week of February 26, 2018

We are back at school and I hope everyone had a wonderful break. Fortunately, we have a long stretch of days in school and we will be getting down to the business of learning.

Math:

2nd grade- we will focus on different ways of writing numbers through 1000 and word problems using addition and subtraction

3rd grade- we will focus on finding an unknown number when multiplying and dividing, as well as solving 2 step word problems

2nd grade- we will focus on the same story told in different versions

Language Arts:

we will focus on vocabulary words using prefixes and suffixes and we will continue writing opinion papers

Wednesday, Feb. 14 is Valentine’s Day-

If you would like your child to pass out cards, that is fine, but please remember they are also probably doing that in their homeroom.

There is a new program that will be helpful to your child. It is called USA Test Prep. There url is https://www.usatestprep.com/. I will be sending home your child’s specific log in. This is a fabulous site for test practice. It will also give you a chance to see what the grade level passages look like, so you know the expectation.

Remember the week of Feb. 19-23 is no school.

This week, we will focus on:

Math:

Our main focus will be on counting and number sense. Also, 3rd graders will look at data and generate line plots.

Last week, we worked with counting money. Please give your child real life opportunities to make change for \$1 or \$5. This will be a tremendous help to your child. Also, 3rd graders, keep practicing those multiplication facts.

2nd grade- We will be focusing on reading fables and fairy tales and being able to recount them and learn the moral it is teaching.

3rd grade- Read 180/System 44- Also, we will be making comparisons between 2 different stories

Language Arts:

We will continue focusing on spelling patterns. Your child has also been introduced to cursive.

We will continue opinion writing. I am so proud of the writing we just finished! Your child wrote about his/her favorite season!

# Week of February 5, 2018

February is Black History Month.

Pictures will be:

K-2- Feb. 14

3-5- Feb. 15

Progress reports will be coming home this week.

February Break will be in 2 weeks.

Math:

2nd grade- We will work on money and problem solving

3rd grade- We will continue with fractions and problem solving. Have your child practice multiplication facts 0-9. Knowing these facts will help your child be successful in math.

We will be working on Author’s purpose- PIE- an author writes to persuade, inform, and entertain. We will continue to work on reading and comprehension. If your 3rd grader has not told you about System 44, ask… it is great!

Language Arts:

Your child is doing a great job writing an opinion piece! We are continuing with this.

# Week of January 29, 2018

Your children are working hard at school!

We are starting to work on a site called USA Test Prep for 3rd – 5th graders. The URL is https://www.usatestprep.com/

We have not yet had a chance to discuss it in class, but will this coming week. They will have a login and can go on it at home. The login will go home with them next week. I have assigned two math “tests” and “practice” for my math students. One is for this upcoming week and one is for next week. Please don’t let them get frustrated with it, but please let them try. I am fine with you helping them. This is simply more practice.

2nd grade- pictures will be Wednesday, February 14

3rd grade- pictures will be Thursday, February 15

Math:

2nd grade will continue with shapes and will work on money and problem solving.

3rd grade will continue with fractions and problem solving. One of the best way to work on fractions at home is to spend time cooking as a family. Also, please continue to work on memorizing the multiplication facts 0-9. If you need resources, please let me know.

2nd- Guided reading and Raz Kids

3rd- We will continue with Read 180/System 44– what a great program!

We will be working on Author’s Purpose- to persuade, inform, or entertain and explaining how a character’s actions leads to a sequence of events.

Language Arts:

We will continue writing Opinion papers. We will discuss the four seasons and decide on a favorite.

# Week of Jan. 22, 2018

Hopefully, the snow will stay away for a while, so we can be back on track.

We will continue with what we planned for last week.

Math:

Shapes- solids and plane shapes, and going into fractions

We, of course, are continuing with Read 180/System 44- with a focus on asking and answering questions and main idea

Language Arts:

We will focus on use of commas and writing opinion papers

# Week of Jan 15

Remember that Monday, Jan 15 is Martin Luther King Jr Day- there will be no school.

Math:

We will be working on shapes, fractions and word problems. Also, students will begin learning how to use a calculator. Please let them use it on their homework, when appropriate, to check work.

I am testing your children on DRAs. We will continue to work on our reading and comprehension skills. We will work on making connections between events in text and seeing how they are related.

Language Arts:

We are working on writing opinion papers and learning when to use commas in writing.

3rd grade will start working on cursive writing

Math:

3rd grade we will continue with multiplying and dividing

Keep working on the multiplication facts 0-9

We will be working in Read 180/System 44

3rd grade- we will focus on main idea

Language Arts:

We will continue with understanding non-fiction text as well as bossy r rule

We are starting opinion writing

# Week of January 1, 2018

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful break and lots of fun family time!

We are now at the mid-year point which means that we are beginning our 3rd quarter of school. We are going to dive right into learning! You will receive your child’s report card and progress reports (on goals and objectives) this Friday. Please be on the look-out for it. Also, let me know if you have any questions/concerns regarding your child’s progress.

During the next 2 days we will review expectations for learning, goal-setting, and review skills we learned before the break. Of course, I look forward to hearing about your child’s break.

Happy Holidays!

Remember that Tuesday and Wednesday are early release days. Please know how your child is getting home.

We will finish up work on Monday, and have a celebration. During their homeroom special activities, the students will be with their homerooms. Enjoy your family time and I look forward to seeing your child in 2018!
