A Peek at Our Week {Week 7}

Reading: This week we will focus on asking and answering questions about a fiction text. We will use the sentence starters “Who?”, “What?”, “Where?”, “When?”, and “Why?”.

Writing: We will talk about what makes a narrative writing piece (using “I”, actions, feelings, temporal words like first, next, then, and last). We will start brainstorming and writing a first draft for a narrative writing piece.

Spelling: This week’s spelling pattern focus is on long a digraphs. Our words are train, stay, eight, sprain, tray, freight, complain, obey, and raisin.

Math: We will begin working on strategies for addition.

Social Studies: We will finish our regions and rivers of Georgia unit with a regions test on Tuesday and the map labeling test on Wednesday. We will then begin learning about the Creek and Cherokee.

A Peek at Our Week {Week 5}

A Peek at Our Week {Week 4}

Writing: This week we will focus on author’s craft. We will study imagery, tension, and literary language using the mentor text Owl Moon.

Spelling/Phonics: Our spelling pattern this week is cvce (consonant, vowel, consonant, e) words. Our spelling words are crate, stroke, glide, woke, plate, pride, reptile, naptime, and mistake. Make sure your kiddo pays close attention to whether a word is a one- or two-syllable word.

A Peek at Our Week {Week 3}

Here is a look at what we will be focusing on this week…

Reading: This week we will focus on working hard to solve tricky words while reading.

Writing: This week we will continue to work on studying the writing “masters” for inspiration and ideas.

Spelling: Our spelling focus pattern this week is on closed-syllable words. A closed-syllable word is a word that has a short vowel and ends in a consonant. Our spelling words are shock, fish, chunk, rock, trunk, dish, napkin, magnet, and basket. Remember, it is important for students to not just memorize a list of words. Rather, students should be able to apply spelling patterns within their writing and generalize patterns when spelling new words. I told the kiddos today to work on learning the three words they learned today (These words are written in their reading section of the LIGHTHOUSE Binder.) and to try to use the pattern to form new words. For example, by replacing the ck in shock with p you can now make the word shop. Shop begins with the digraph sh and follows the closed-syllable pattern. Our spelling test will be Friday. Students will also be given challenge words that follow the pattern as part of their test.

Math: This week we are working on distinguishing the difference between odd and even numbers.

Science: We will be learning about the seasonal changes of trees.

Homework: Second grade has decided to hold off on homework until the first full week in September. This will give the kiddos time to learn how to complete our weekly homework before it is sent home.

Friday is college spirit wear day. Wear your favorite college team gear and bring in a dollar to support Relay for Life!

I have added the Open House Power Point to a page on the right hand side of my blog. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend!

Have a fabulous week!
