April 23-27

Our schedule is back to normal.  We will be very busy from now to the end of school.

Our learning focus:

Reading- This week we will continue to Compare and Contrast nonfiction text passages. We will read Animal Look-Alikes and in guided reading we will read about the Monarch Butterfly.

Spelling/Phonics: Ending er and est. Spelling words and homework will come home on

Grammar: Irregular verbs and review of proper nouns.

Writing: Our Earth Day lap book will be completed and we will begin our Mother’s Day writing.

Math-Partioning of rectangles, squares, and circles.

Science- We will begin our study on live cycles. We will begin with butterflies, frogs, and alligators.

What else is going on?

·         Please remember we are still reading and taking AR test. Each child needs to have one AR test taken by Wednesday unless they are reading a chapter book. They are able to go to the library each morning before the bell rings and most days during snack time.

·         Target will be Wednesday instead of Tuesday.

·         Blast Off will now be completed in class.

April 16-20

We had a great time at the Fire Safety Village. I hope the children enjoyed it as much as I did!! Our schedule will be different until Wednesday-lunch from 11:30-12:00 and special on Monday and Wednesday.  Thursday we will be back to normal!

Spelling/Phonics: Ending er and or. Words and homework will come home on Monday.

Grammar: Irregular verbs

Writing: This week we will create a log cabin with information we learned about Jimmy Carter.

Math-Arrays and multiplication will continue this week.

Social Studies-Our test on Jimmy Carter will be Wednesday.  We will talk about Earth Day and create a lap book about how to help our environment.

April 9-13

Thank you so much for the fabulous Teacher Appreciation Week. I loved my Braves and Falcons gifts, letters from the children, surprise lunches, gift cards, but your children are my favorite gift.  Thank you so much for sharing them with me each day!!!

We will visit the Fire Safety Village on Monday. The buses will leave school around 9:00 and return around 1:30.  It is my favorite field trip each year.  The children will be busy all day learning fire safety rules. Please make sure they have tennis shoes on and girls wear pants or shorts. We have sack lunches to purchase at school however if they bring their lunch make sure it is in a paper or plastic bag so it can be thrown away. Also make sure they bring a drink that can be thrown away, please no nice water bottles. The whole second grade will go on the field trip together so it is very hard to keep up with lunch boxes and water bottles.

Social Studies-We will complete Jimmy Carter this week and have a test on him next week.

A note will come home this week.

Reading- This week we will discuss Author’s Purpose for writing a test; to inform, to persuade, or to entertain. In guided reading we will continue to read The Prince Who Would Not Laugh.  We will ask questions and discuss character traits and providing evidence from the text.

Spelling/Phonics: 2 syllable words. Homework will come home Monday with the words.

What a great second grade performance Thursday night!!! The children looked fantastic and the singing was even better.  Thank you parents for sharing your children!!

 

Our learning focus:

Reading- We will compare the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to other versions and discuss point of view.

Spelling/Phonics: Review week of all the sounds we have discussed.  Their words and assignment will come home on Monday.

Grammar: Shade of Meaning, adjectives, and adverbs will be reviewed.

Writing: This week we will persuade the leprechaun to give up his gold.

Math- Our guided math will review greater than less than, adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers, and word problems. We will have homework on Tuesday and Thursday night.

Science-This week we will discuss the sun. There will be a test on Friday.

·         I love that the children are purchasing books and toys from the book fair.  However they are giving their new things away and playing with them during instruction time. Once they purchase something I am asking them to put it in their book bag so it makes it home safely. Please reinforce this policy with your child. The sack lunch with parents is on Thursday. We eat lunch at 11:50-12:20.  Please join us!!!!

The Second Grade Musical Performance is on Thursday, March 8th at 6:30 p.m. You can bring students to our classroom beginning at 6:15 p.m. (Please let your child know if they are planning on coming so Mr. Bush will know)

 

Our learning focus:

Reading- This week we will compare the story Little Red Riding Hood to other versions and discuss point of view.

Spelling/Phonics: There will be no spelling this week. We will review all the patterns for this 9 weeks.

Grammar: Shade of Meaning

Writing: Opinion writing –Our Favorite Season

Math- We will create our own bar graph and line graph plus review Money word problems.

SHHHH!!!! It’s a SECRET!!

Mrs. Ambrose’s birthday is on Tuesday, February 27th. She does so much for our students, parents, and staff here at Kincaid and we want to celebrate her in a special way. We are asking that each second grade student bring one flower that Tuesday morning and we will combine them into one giant bouquet to surprise Mrs. Ambrose on her birthday. Make sure to not tell her! We don’t want to spoil the surprise!

Our learning focus:

Reading- This week we will compare The Three Little Pigs to different versions of the story. We will also discuss Point of View.

Spelling/Phonics: Silent letters-Words and homework will come home on Monday.

Grammar: Synonyms and antonyms

Writing: Opinion writing –Inside or outside recess

Math- For the next couple of weeks we will and learn about different graphs. We will also review adding and subtracting 3 digit addition and subtraction problems.

Reading/ Social Studies – This week we will learn about Juliett Low who was the leader of the Girl Scouts.

Grammar: Adverbs and adjectives. Homework on Monday.

Writing: Opinion writing –Our favorite special and why we love it!!! We will complete this writing.

Math-We will finish our unit on money and have our assessment on Thursday.

February 5-9

We have a big week!

Our learning focus:          

Reading- This week we will learn about the 2018 Winter Olympics. If guided reading books come home with your child please have your child read the book that night and PLEASE return it the next day. We use those books in reading groups.

Social Studies-Jackie Robinson will continue to be our focus. The test will be Friday over the vocabulary, character traits, and how he helped change his environment.

Spelling/Phonics: The last lesson on “r” controlled words. Words and homework will come home on Friday.

Grammar: Adverbs

Writing: Opinion writing –Our favorite special and why we love it!!!

Math– Money and making change from $1.00, $5, 00, and $10.00.

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off will be completed in class.
  • Lunch Change on Tuesday. We will eat lunch at 11:10.
  • A Valentine class list came home on Friday. The children are welcome to make a box at home. I have white bags for the children that do not want to make a Valentine box.
  • Thank you for sending in Box Tops
  • Library will be Tuesday this week.
  • Stem Lab on Thursday.
  • We will be taking a field trip to the Cobb Center to watch the ballet, “Beauty and the Beast” on Wednesday, February 7th. We will be departing from Kincaid around 9:45 and arriving back at 1:00. For students that are purchasing a lunch at school this day, it will be a sack lunch. The second grade will plan to eat lunch after they arrive back to Kincaid around 1:00. Students are encouraged to bring a bigger snack this day in which we will eat before departing for the ballet.
