Monday- Art Day, Kickball Game, and Ice Cream Party. Please have your child bring a towel to sit on for the kickball game. Don’t forget your ice cream toppings!!

Tuesday- Game Day was so much fun! Today we will play Math and Reading games.

Wednesday-Last Day- No book bags today!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you wonderful moms!!

Thank you for the enjoyable teacher appreciation week. The cards, candy, and flowers were fabulous. I can’t wait to get my message!! You are the BEST!!

Our learning focus:
Reading– In Reading Workshop we will continue with Main Idea.
Writing: End of the year letter to our friends.
Grammar/Mentor sentences: Review
Math- Adding and subtracting strategies and word problems.
Science- Life cycle test on Wednesday.

If your child has a summer birthday and you would like to send in a treat to share with the class we would love to celebrate their birthday early!! Anytime would be fine.

What else is going on?

May 14 K-2 Field Day. Please have your child wear tennis shoes and don’t forget the sun screen.
• May 16-17 2nd grade Talent Show from 8:10-8:50.
• Portfolio Picnic on the morning of May 17th 9-9:30.
• Have your child bring their favorite game to school on Friday, May 17. We will play games after the Portfolio Picnic.

Parents,
I have jury duty starting Monday. It could not have come at a worse time! Julie Edwards is my sub. Most of the children know her from ASP. I hope to be out only a 3-4 days. Please talk to your children about following the rules and respect to all teacher these last few weeks of school. Thanks
Our learning focus:
Reading- In Reading Workshop we will work on main idea in informational passages.
Writing: Mother’s Day/ What it’s like to be a second grader!
Grammar/Mentor sentences: “Three Cheers for Tacky” w/ focus on punctuation
Spelling/Phonics- Suffix ful and able. Homework on Monday and test on Friday.
Math- Arrays – End of unit test; revisit adding and subtracting strategies
Science- Life cycle of a plant
*Mrs. Kotarba came to visit the class this week for a Summer Safety Lesson. The kids loved learning safety rules by stepping into different fairy tales in the book, Once Upon a Dragon.
They also loved learning internet safety with Timon and Pumbaa. We only watched a few minutes of the video, but the full video is available at the link below.

Writing: Mother’s Day
Grammar/Mentor sentences: The Groundhog Assistance- Past tense verbs, capital letters
Spelling/Phonics- Suffix er and est. Homework on Monday and test on Friday.
Math- Repeated addition, groups, and arrays.
Social Studies- Life cycles.

Reading– In Reading Workshop we will read nonfiction books about Earth Day and answer questions.
Writing: We will create an Earth Day Lapbook.
Grammar: Capital letters- Proper Nouns
Spelling/Phonics– Suffix er and or. Homework on Monday and test on Friday.
Math– Repeated addition, groups, and arrays.
Science- Life cycle of a dog and chicken.

What else is going on?

• Blast Off will be completed in class.
• Testing for 3rd and 5th grade. Our class must be respectful and quiet. They are testing in the computer lab which is our next-door neighbor.

Spring is here!
Our learning focus:

Reading– In Reading Workshop we will continue comparing 2 stories about the same topic. This week we our stories about the life cycle of a frog.
Writing: Which enrichment class do you like best? Why?
Grammar: Irregular verbs
Spelling/Phonics– Suffix ed and ing. Homework on Monday and test on Friday.
Math- Repeated addition, groups, and arrays.
Social Studies- Life cycle of a frog.

Reading- In Reading Workshop we will continue the author’s purpose for writing a book.

Writing: This week the children will write an opinion about a book they have read.

Grammar: Irregular verbs

Spelling/Phonics- Prefix dis.  Words and homework will come home on Monday. Test on Friday.

Math- 2-D and 3-D shapes.

Social Studies- Jimmy Carter- We will have a test on Friday.

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off will be completed in class.
  • Please return the white report card envelope and the registration packet with corrections if needed. Don’t forget the stamps!
  • We have schedules changes this week. Our class will see an Opera, Lion King, a Puppet show and pictures on Wednesday. Remember to send in your money if you want to purchase pictures.

Our learning focus:

Reading- In Reading Workshop we will discuss the author’s purpose for writing a book.

Writing: We will continue with writing our opinions but now we will give opinions about books we are reading or have read.

Mentor Sentences

Spelling/Phonics- Prefixes un and re.  Words and homework will come home on Monday.

Math-Money, end of 9 weeks test, and an introduction to shapes.

Social Studies- Jimmy Carter
