October 23-27

The Fun Run was wonderful!! I loved seeing our class runners Brayden, Ela, Eva-Rose, Tyler, Prisha, Milo, and Ari.

Our learning focus:          

Reading- This week we will focus on Author’s Point of View and Details.  We will have many lessons this week and also work on this skill in guided reading. The children need to continue taking their AR test.  We go to the library as a class on Wednesdays but they are welcome to go in the mornings before school if needed.

Science- We will learn about the Changes that can occur on Earth by animals, people, weather, and plants.  This will also be our first informational writing.

Spelling/Phonics: oi words is our focus this week. The words and homework will come home on Monday.

Grammar: Contractions

Math: Adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with regrouping. Homework will come home on Tuesday and Thursday.

 

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off was sent home on Friday and is due this Friday. Don’t forget to use MobyMax-Fact Fluency as a way of practice.
  • The STEM Lab is looking for empty cereal boxes (please remove the bag and any crumbs inside). There will be a basket outside the STEM Lab for the boxes. We will be using them later this year for some designing challenges. Thank you ~ Ms. Marchelle.
  • On Friday, the children can wear their costumes to school if they pay a fee to The Foundation. More information will be sent home this week.
  • Foundation Halloween Dance Friday from 4-6.

October 16-20

I look forward to seeing you this week!! The children will be dismissed at 12:20.  There will be no clubs but there will be ASP.  Please send a note for any transportation changes.  Thank You!

Our learning focus:          

Reading/Science-Informational stories and books will be our focus this 9 weeks. During reading, we will read about Energy-Motion/Pushes and Pulls.  There will be a test on Friday with a study guide coming home on Tuesday.  The children are required to take their 2 AR test by Friday.

Spelling/Phonics: There will be no spelling list this week.  Phonics homework on Monday.

Grammar: Possessive Nouns

Math: Adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with regrouping. Blast off will be completed in school this week.  Continue to have your children practice their facts on MobyMax.

  • Blast Off came home on Friday. Please return it next Friday.

October 2-6

Reading- This week we will work on character problems and how they solved their problems. Remind your child to read and take their AR test during the week.  As a class, we go to the library every Wednesday but they are welcome to go any morning before the 7:50 bell.

Spelling/Phonics: Long e diagraphs:  ee, ey, ea.  Homework and words will come home on Monday.

Grammar: We will review nouns, common and proper, plural, irregular plural nouns, and collective nouns.

Written Expression– Narrative writing about our staycation or vacation over fall break.

Math: We will wrap up our money unit and review what we have discussed this 9 weeks.  Homework on Tuesday and Thursday night.

Science-What is matter? How can matter change? Homework on Wednesday night.

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off will be completed in class this week.
  • Thank you Tyler for the birthday treats! We are celebrating Emma’s birthday this week.
  • Science lab on Thursday.

September 18-22

What a beautiful weekend!

Our learning focus: 

Reading- This week we will be back to our guided reading and language arts centers.  Please remind your children to read their library books during the week and take AR test on or before Friday. Many children are reading books Friday morning and taking their test.  They are to read during the week and try and have the test taken by Friday. Thanks for your help!!!

Spelling/Phonics: The lesson on long o diagraphs will be introduced on Monday and the words and homework will come home.  The children will have a test on Friday.

Grammar: Collective Nouns

Written Expression– Narrative writing about an adventure with a friend will be completed this week.

Math: Strategies will be completed and we will move into money. The focus is on pennies, nickels, and dimes but we will also touch on quarters.

Social Studies: On Monday, we will complete our study guide on government and send it home. The class will have a test on Wednesday. On Thursday. The children will work in groups to create their own country with rules and laws.

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off is due Friday.
  • 2 AR quizzes should be taken by Friday.
  • Our schedule will remain this way through Tuesday with lunch being 11:30-12:00 and specials 1:20-1:40.
  • Thank you to Ari’s parents for inviting the police officers to the class to talk about rules and laws.
  • Conference letters go out after fall break for the week of October 16. If you know a time that you would like please let me know ASAP.

9/13-9/15

I hope everyone stayed safe during our encounter with Irma!!

Our learning focus: 

Reading- We will continue to work with our book It’s Justin Time, Amber Brown.   We will discuss the story elements, vocabulary, and asking questions, along with character responses to problems.

Spelling/Phonics: We will not have spelling this week however we will talk about our vowel diagraphs for next with the long sound of o.

Grammar: This week we will introduce collective nouns.  These are deck of cards, heard of cows, flock of birds, etc.

Written Expression– Narrative writing about an adventure with a friend.

Math: We will review our strategies to learn our basic addition and subtraction facts; counting on, doubles and doubles plus one; fact families; making ten. Keep practicing basic facts on Mobymax and using flash cards.

Social Studies: Who are and what does the Mayor, Governor, and President do?

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off is due Friday.
  • Our lunch will be 11:30-12:00 and specials 1:20-1:40 for the remainder of this week. I’m not sure about next week.

September 5-8

I hope everyone had a relaxing Labor Day weekend!!!!

Our learning focus:

Reading- This week our shared reading is It’s Justin Time, Amber Brown. It’s a book about a birthday and friendship.  We will discuss the story elements, vocabulary, and asking questions.

Each child in second grade is required to read and take 2 AR test each week. Please help you child remember to do this and not wait until Friday to complete this assignment.  The children had time to read each morning before school and time during the school day. More than half the class waited until Friday to take their test. This week let’s take at least one test by Thursday.

Spelling/Phonics: This week we will focus on long a words.  The spelling words will come home Tuesday. Spelling homework will be Wednesday night. Please study these words with your child.  We will have a test on Friday.

Grammar: Irregular plural nouns

Written Expression-This week, we will write a story about our about an experience with their best friend.

Math: The children are skip counting, renaming numbers, and more practice with basic facts. It is so important that the children learn their basic facts.  Don’t forget about MobyMax to help with practicing their facts. Fact Fluency is the program they need to use for practice.

Social Studies This week we will discuss rules and laws.  We will begin learning about the duties of the President, Governor, and Mayor.

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off will be completed in class this week.
  • We will have Guidance on Thursday.
  • Our schedule will change on Wednesday, 9/6 to 9/15. Our lunch will be 11:30-12:00 and specials 1:20-1:40.
  • Parents-please send in dry erase markers. We use these marks all the time during math time. The children lose them and they dry out.  Thank you!!!

August 28-September 1

Parents don’t forget to send in the permission slip to Performing Arts.  You do not have to pay now just sign the permission slip and return it.   Also picture day is Wednesday so if you want to purchase pictures return that as well.  Wednesday is also Early Release so the children will be dismissed at 12:30.  They do have ASP.

Our learning focus:

Reading- We will continue to talk about our favorite birthdays this week and our reading activities that go with Hooray a Piñata and Birthday Basket for Tea.  The children were good about returning their guided reading books and taking their 2 AR test.  Please remind them to take their test each week.

Spelling/Phonics: This week we will focus more on the open syllable rules and words.  These words are long vowel words. The spelling words will come home Monday along with spelling homework. It is due back Tuesday. Please study these words with your child.  We will have a test on Friday.

Grammar: Plural Nouns

Written Expression-A narrative on their favorite birthday focusing on the bold beginning.

Math: The children are comparing numbers this week. They will have math homework on Tuesday night and Thursday night. Thanks for returning Blast of on Friday. Encourage your children to practice fact fluency on Moby Max. 15 minutes a night would help your child to learn their facts.

Social Studies The SS test over the regions and rivers will be Wednesday.  A study guide will come home tomorrow so help your children study for their first test.

What else is going on?

  • Homework will starts this week. Monday nights – spelling; Tuesday and Thursday –math; Wednesday- grammar or reading comprehension; Friday-return Blast Off and have 2 AR test taken.
  • Our library time will be changed this week because of picture day. I will let the children know on Monday when it will be.

August 21-25

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  The Solar Eclipse is finally here.  K – 2 students will remain in the building and watch live streaming of the eclipse.  Parents are encouraged to check out students by 1:30 and the last checkouts can be by 2:00. We will begin dismissal at 3:00.

Our learning focus:

Reading- On Monday, we will read and do activities on the solar eclipse. The remainder of the week we will discuss our favorite birthdays.  Hooray a Piñata and Birthday Basket for Tea will be the books read in shared reading.  Questioning and the plot will be discussed for both books.  This week, our library time is on Thursday.  Your child is welcome to go to the library any time during week.  I like to send them before school so they have more time to look for a book.  They are required to take 2 AR test this week. I will still help the children that are unfamiliar with the program.  We will also begin Guided Reading.  At times, I will send home books and ask that they read to you and return it the next day.  Some groups will have homework in guided reading such as book reports, questions, and creative activities that go with their books.

Spelling/Phonics: This week we are talking about open syllable word and the silent e.  These words are long vowel words. The spelling words will come home Monday along with spelling homework. It is due back Tuesday. Please study these words with your child.  We will have a test on Friday.

Social Studies- Our class will read and draw the major rivers in Georgia.

Classroom competitions for the Kincaid Foundation donation drive are in full swing. The class with the highest percent of students participating in each grade wins a Popsicle party! The Foundation is requesting a donation of $75 per student or $150 per family, but EVERY donation counts towards our class competition!  100% of donations STAY AT KINCAID!!!

August 14-18

I hope everyone had a great weekend.  I know fall sports and activities have started so I’m sure your weekends were busy.  We have a busy week ahead.

Our learning focus:

Reading- We will work on an independent project in Social Studies about our 5 Regions.  The children will add facts we have covered in class to a flip book along with coloring a map with a key and compass rose. Later in the week, we will discuss our standard on questioning. I hope to start our language arts center rotation and do some guided reading groups.  We went to the library on Wednesday.  The children can go to the library to check out new books each morning and at snack time.  Each child needs to take one AR test this week.  They can always take more.

Spelling/Phonics- Our spelling words will come home Monday.  Closed syllables will be our focus for our phonics work.  The children will work on this skill in language arts centers as well as whole group instruction.  The children will be tested on these words Friday.  On the bottom of the spelling are SS vocabulary that the children are required to know for our regions test. These words will be tested next week.

Written Expression– Our discussion this week will be fragmented sentences and stretching out a simple sentence to make it more interesting.

Math: Thank you for reminding your children to turn in their Blast Off.  Each day we work on facts by taking a Math Muscle 1 minute test.  We are focusing on adding 1’s this week. Our guided math is in full swing. On Friday, the children rotated to 3 groups and did a fantastic job. This week we will have teacher feature added to the rotation which is me working with a group. I am excited about getting started.

Social Studies- Our project will be introduced and the children will begin working.

What else is going on?
