February 12-16

We have another big week full of fun activities including Valentine’s Day. Have you child bring in their valentines on Wednesday. 

Our learning focus:          

Reading/ Social Studies – This week we will learn about Juliett Low who was the leader of the Girl Scouts.

Spelling/Phonics: no spelling this week.

Grammar: Adverbs and adjectives. Homework on Monday.

Writing: Opinion writing –Our favorite special and why we love it!!! We will complete this writing.

Math-We will finish our unit on money and have our assessment on Thursday.

What else is going on?

  • Please remember we are still reading and taking AR test. Each child needs to have one AR test taken by Wednesday unless they are reading a chapter book. They are able to go to the library each morning before the bell rings and most days during snack time.
  • Blast Off is due Friday.
  • Germ Quest program on Monday.
  • Guidance lesson on Wednesday.
  • Library lesson on Tuesday.
  • Stem Day on Friday. We will race our cars at 8:15.

February 5-9

We have a big week!

Our learning focus:          

Reading- This week we will learn about the 2018 Winter Olympics. If guided reading books come home with your child please have your child read the book that night and PLEASE return it the next day. We use those books in reading groups.

Social Studies-Jackie Robinson will continue to be our focus. The test will be Friday over the vocabulary, character traits, and how he helped change his environment.

Spelling/Phonics: The last lesson on “r” controlled words. Words and homework will come home on Friday.

Grammar: Adverbs

Writing: Opinion writing –Our favorite special and why we love it!!!

Math– Money and making change from $1.00, $5, 00, and $10.00.

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off will be completed in class.
  • Lunch Change on Tuesday. We will eat lunch at 11:10.
  • A Valentine class list came home on Friday. The children are welcome to make a box at home. I have white bags for the children that do not want to make a Valentine box.
  • Thank you for sending in Box Tops
  • Library will be Tuesday this week.
  • Stem Lab on Thursday.
  • We will be taking a field trip to the Cobb Center to watch the ballet, “Beauty and the Beast” on Wednesday, February 7th. We will be departing from Kincaid around 9:45 and arriving back at 1:00. For students that are purchasing a lunch at school this day, it will be a sack lunch. The second grade will plan to eat lunch after they arrive back to Kincaid around 1:00. Students are encouraged to bring a bigger snack this day in which we will eat before departing for the ballet.

January 29-February 2

Reading- This week we will continue reading Fables.  We will discuss the origin, character traits, and the moral of the fable.

Social Studies- We started learning about Jackie Robinson and the children love it!!!

Spelling/Phonics: “ir, er, ur” words. Spelling words will come home again on Monday with homework.  I forgot to give our spelling test on Friday. We have to move on to our new words so no test on OR words.

Grammar: Adverbs

Writing: Opinion writing –WE will read Town Mouse Country Mouse and decide where we would rather live- the country or the city.

Math– We are moving on to money. This nine weeks we will learn about the quarter, ways to make different amounts of money, and making change from a dollar.

Writing: Opinion writing –Not Norman-is a cute story about a goldfish. What would be your choice of pet and why???

Math-For the next couple of weeks, we will add and subtract 3 and 4 digit numbers.  We will continue to work on 2 step word problems.

Math-Making numbers – We will review making numbers using base 10 blocks, words, expanded form, and place value. We will also compare and order numbers as well as skip counting.

December 18-20

Important:  Parents please send in any of these material you have at home: small cardboard boxes , flat pieces of cardboard, drink carton, paper cup, toilet paper tube, plastic water bottle, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners. We will use these materials for our STEM project after the holidays.

Our classroom holiday party will be taking place on Monday from 11-12. Thank you in advance for all your help and support with this! We will be participating in the Sing-A-Long on Tuesday morning and will be having a second grade math challenge taking place on Wednesday morning. Tuesday and Wednesday are EARLY RELEASE so our lunch and specials will change,

Reading- This week we will begin our Jan Brett study.  Throughout the week we will read different stories written by Jan Brett and work on different activities that pertain to the story.

Social Studies-We will review all 3 Georgia heroes: James Oglethorpe, Mary Musgrove, and Tomochichi.

Spelling/Phonics: No spelling this week.

Grammar: Review capital letters, contractions, and possessive nouns.

Writing:  The children will write their final informational writing on our 3 Georgia heroes.

Math– Review word problems, adding and subtracting with regrouping, making numbers, and skip counting.

 

 What else is going on?

  • Blast Off will be completed in school this week.
  • The Giving Tree to support the Must Ministries Toy Shop will begin on Monday, November 13th. If you would like to participate, you or your child may take a paper ornament off of the Giving Tree. On each ornament is a label with a gift for a child in our community. Please purchase the item and turn the NEW and UNWRAPPED item under the tree. We will collect gifts between November 13th and December 15th. If you have questions about the Giving Tree, please call the counselors office. Thank you for your generosity.
  • 3rd grade chorus concert on Wednesday.

What a beautiful weekend.  I hope everyone was able to go outside and enjoy.

Our learning focus:          

Reading- We will continue working with poetry learning about rhyming, repetition, and alliteration.

Social Studies- This week we will read and learn about Tomochichi. He worked together with Mary Musgrove and James Oglethorpe in founding of Georgia. This week we will have a test over him on Friday.  Vocabulary words are on the bottom half of the spelling list. Please help your child with those words.

Spelling/Phonics: Prefixes. Words and homework will come home on Monday.

Grammar: Prefixes

Writing:  This week we will create a poster about Mary Musgrove. Your child is welcome to print off pictures of Mary at home and bring them to school for their poster.

Math– We will continue working on 2 step word problems.  Our rotation will consist of MobyMax, word problems, and journals. The children will have homework on Tuesday and Thursday.
