I enjoyed seeing everyone at the Fall Festival on Friday night. It was such a fun time!!  Thank you Mrs. Contos for helping organize the event.

Our Performing Arts field trip is on Thursday.  You have already paid and signed permission for your child to attend.  We will eat an early lunch and leave for Marietta High School around 10.  We will return around 1:30.

Our learning focus:

Reading- In Reading Workshop this week we will continue discussing beginning, middle, and end of a fiction story. We will also discuss the problem and how the character response to the problem.  We had at least 15 children win prizes for AR reading. Kaitlyn and Jonas were the big winners for taking the most AR test this week. Congratulations!!! Keep reading and taking those test.

Grammar:  This week we will read The Three Snow Bears and focus on collective nouns.  Each day we work with a sentence from the text. We discuss capital letters, parts of speech, and create our own sentence following the same pattern.  There will be a test each Friday over what we learned.

Writing: A time when I was scared is our topic. On Monday we will work on our bold beginning and begin to write our rough draft.

Spelling/Phonics- We will continue with Unit 3 Open Syllables- long vowel words.  The words will come home on Monday along with homework.  Practice your words throughout the week.

Math- On Monday and Tuesday we will work on solving word problems. The remainder of the week will be spent on Place Value.  There will be homework on Tuesday but not Thursday.  Please return Your Blast Off by Friday.

Social Studies- We will complete out study on The Government and have our test on Friday.  The study sheet will come home on Wednesday. Study for your test.

What else is going on?

  • Our class has 4 pictures on the This Is Us Wall. Please try and send in your child’s pictures.
  • Math Blast went home on Friday. It is due Friday but can be turned in before.
  • Friday is our Library Day. Please help your child remember to read and return their library books.

International Day of Peace

Friday, September 21st

Next Friday, September 21 is the International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”).  Peace Day is observed around the world each year on September 21. Established in 1981 by a unanimous United Nations resolution, Peace Day provides a globally shared date for all humanity to commit to Peace above all differences and to contribute to building a Culture of Peace.  To celebrate this wonderful day, Kincaid staff and students are participating in several activities. 

  • Teachers will be delivering lessons and activities to promote kindness and acceptance.
  • Students and staff are encouraged to wear “Peace” themed clothes to school. Break out your tye-dyes, headbands, bellbottoms etc. to celebrate peace at Kincaid and in our larger world.
  • Rausch will create “Pinwheels for Peace” with all students to display outside on the front lawn.  These pinwheels will be put out on the afternoon of September 20th. You and your student are welcome to view the display on the evening of September 20th or on September 21st.

We have a busy week so I hope everyone rested up over the weekend!

Our learning focus:

Reading- In Reading Workshop this week we will begin discussing beginning, middle, and end of a fiction story. We had at least 10 children win prizes for AR reading. Kaitlyn was the big winner for taking the most AR test this week. Congratulations!!! Keep reading and taking those test.

Grammar:  This week we will watch Sweet Tooth on YouTube and focus on irregular plural nouns.  Each day we work with a sentence from the text. We discuss capital letters, parts of speech, and create our own sentence following the same pattern.  There will be a test each Friday over what we learned.

Writing: A time when I was scared is our next writing topic. This week we will focus on small moments and our scary episodes.

Spelling/Phonics- We will continue with Unit 2 which is Vce words.  Practice the words throughout the week with your children. The children will quiz each other on Friday.

Math- In guided math we will work on Adding 2 and 3 digit numbers decomposing numbers.

Social Studies-The roles of the President, Governor, and Mayor will be our topics this week.

What else is going on?

·         Guidance on Monday along with a Library Lesson.

·         Health Wise on Wednesday and Science Lab on Friday.

·         Please check purple folder for homework.

·         Our class has 4 pictures on the This Is Us Wall. Please try and send in your child’s pictures.

Enjoy your 3-day weekend!!!

Our learning focus:

Reading- In Reading Workshop this week we will continue to discuss the Wh questions. The students need to ask and answer questions using key details from their books.  I love how the children are taking AR test!! Keep reading!!

Grammar:  This week we will read Stellaluna and work on plural nouns and irregular plural nouns.  Each day we work with a sentence from the text. We discuss capital letters, parts of speech, and create our own sentence following the same pattern.  There will be a test each Friday over what we learned.

Writing: We will complete our “OUCH” stories this week.

Spelling/Phonics- Unit 2 which is Vce words will come home on Tuesday.  Practice the words throughout the week with your children. The children will quiz each other on Friday.

Math- In guided math we will work on subtraction (basic facts) and adding 2 and 3 digit numbers without regrouping. Everyone turned in their Blast Off again which was wonderful. Homework will come home on Tuesday and Thursday this week in Math.

Social Studies-Rules and law will be the focus this week. A reading passage will come home on Wednesday on laws for homework.

Beautiful weather this weekend!!!

Our learning focus:

Reading- In Reading Workshop this week we will discuss the Wh questions. The students need to ask and answer questions using key details from their books.  This week they are required to take 1 test and get 70% for it to count.  Our library day is Friday so remember to return your books each Friday.  If they are not finished with their book they can recheck it out. After Labor Day, the children are required to take 2 AR test per week.

Grammar:  This week we will read Chrysanthemum and work on proper nouns and plural nouns. Each day we work with a sentence from the text. We discuss capital letters, parts of speech, and create our own sentence following the same pattern.  There will be a test each Friday over what we learned.

Writing: We will continue to work on our “OUCH” stories along with writing our first birthday letter to Alejandra.

Spelling/Phonics- We will start our first lesson on Monday.  The words will come home to be practiced and we will work on them throughout the week.

Math- Our full guided math rotation will begin this week.  The focus is addition strategies to 20.  Everyone turned in their Blast off which was wonderful. Homework will come home on Tuesday and Thursday this week in Math.

Social Studies- We will finish the regions on Monday and move to the rivers on Tuesday.  We will have our first SS test on Friday. A study guide will come home on Wednesday.

I hope everyone had a nice weekend!! I’m sure you heard about the fire drill during our lunch time.  Your children did a wonderful job getting out of the lunchroom quickly and quietly.  I was very proud of them!!

Our learning focus:

Reading- In Reading Workshop this week we will discuss the different genres, reading with a partner, and asking questions with fiction and nonfiction books.  Most everyone took an AR test last week.  This week they are required to take 1 test and get 70% for it to count.  Our library day is Friday so remember to return your books each Friday.  If they are not finished with their book they can recheck it out.

Grammar:  This week we will listen to the story Memoirs of Goldfish. Each day we work with a sentence from the text. We discuss capital letters, parts of speech, and create our own sentence following the same pattern.  There will be a test each Friday over what we learned.

Writing: We will continue to work on our “OUCH” stories.

Math- Our full guided math rotation will begin this week.  The focus is addition strategies to 20.  Everyone turned in their Blast off which was wonderful. Homework will come home on Tuesday and Thursday this week in Math.

Yea!!! We made it through our first week and second Grade!!!!

Our learning focus:

Reading- This week we will continue learning about Reading Workshop.  We will begin guided reading groups and learn how to take AR test.  If your child is ready for a test we can take the test in the morning before school. Tell them to tell me they are ready and I will help them.

Grammar: Our 2nd week of Mentor Sentences.  This week we will read Officer Buckles and Gloria. Each day we work with a sentence from the text. We discuss capital letters, parts of speech, and create our own sentence following the same pattern.  On Friday, we will take a test over what we learned in class.

Writing: In Writers workshop, we will begin writing a personal narrative. The topic is an OUCH story. The story will revolve around when the children were sick or hurt.  We will spend 2 weeks on this story.

Math- Workbook Nook and Journal will be introduced to the Guided Math rotation.  Each station will last 15 minutes so the children are learning math stamina.

Social Studies- We will learn about the 5 Regions in Georgia.

 

This week, Mrs. Kotarba came to visit our class. The children learned about her job as our school counselor. Mrs. Kotarba was excited to meet our new students, and to remind our returning students about school counseling at Kincaid. Mrs. Kotarba will be visiting our class every three weeks. Our class will work with her on friendship, conflict resolution, study skills, career awareness and safety skills. Please contact [email protected] or by phone (770) 578-7238 if you ever need to discuss your student with her.

Our first full week in Second Grade!!

Our learning focus:

Reading- This week we will introduce reading workshop and work on our reading stamina.

Grammar: Mentor Sentences will be introduced with the book, First Day Jitters.

Writing: Writers Workshop will begin this week.  Our class will also complete their All About Me posters and the first page of their second grade portfolio.

Math- Picture and bar graphs have been our focus.  We will also begin to introduce the guided math stations at the end of the week.

 

 

What else is going on?

·         OPEN HOUSE is Thursday night at 6:30.  Please try to come.  I will discuss our schedule, expectations, and homework for the year.  It is very important that we are all on the same page for the coming year.  I look forward to seeing at least one parent for each of my students!!!

·         Please send a note home with any transportation changes.

·         Homework will not start until next week.  Your child can be reading and practicing their math facts to begin sharpening their skills.
