We had the highest daily attendance among all of the 2nd grade classes and won a PAJAMA day. Your student can wear school appropriate pajamas on Monday, November 13.

Thank you, parents for sending your child to school on-time and ready to learn, every day they feel well!  I hope our class will win again next month!

Our learning focus:          

Reading/Social Studies- This week we will read and learn about James Oglethorpe. He worked together with Tomochichi and Mary Musgrove in founding of Georgia. This week we will have a test over him on Friday.  A study guide will come home on Wednesday along with vocabulary words. Last week we had an open book test on Sequoyah.

Spelling/Phonics: OU and OW words. Their list and homework will come home Monday.

Grammar: Reflexive Pronouns

Math– We will continue learning about Measurement and work on word problems with measurement. The children will have homework on Tuesday.

  • Blast Off was sent home on Friday and is due this Friday. Don’t forget to use Moby ax-Fact Fluency as a way of practice.
  • Guidance on Wednesday and Science Lab on Thursday.
  • The Giving Tree to support the Must Ministries Toy Shop will begin on Monday, November 13th. If you would like to participate, you or your child may take a paper ornament off of the Giving Tree. On each ornament is a label with a gift for a child in our community. Please purchase the item and turn the NEW and UNWRAPPED item under the tree. We will collect gifts between November 13th and December 15th. If you have questions about the Giving Tree, please call the counselors office. Thank you for your generosity.

November 6-10

Don’t forget we do not have school on Tuesday.

As a class, we are working on following direction.  Our class has had problems in their enrichment classes, Science Lab, and during Library lessons following directions from other teachers. Please encourage your children to respect all teachers and follow their directions so they are able to enjoy and learn from other classes.

Our learning focus:          

Reading/Social Studies- This week we will read and learn about Sequoyah. He was a Cherokee Indian who lived in Georgia and created the Cherokee alphabet. The children will still be responsible for reading 2 AR books this week.

Spelling/Phonics: We will not have spelling this week because of the short week.

Grammar: Pronouns

Math– We will continue to practice addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, Measurement will be introduced.

We have 3 birthdays in November: Sophia, Emally, and Carter. Happy Birthday!!!

  • Blast Off was sent home on Friday and is due this Friday. Don’t forget to use MobyMax-Fact Fluency as a way of practice.
  • Library on Wednesday and we will have a lesson on Thursday.

October 30-November 3

What happened to fall!!! Bring your coats because we will go outside tomorrow.

Our learning focus:          

Reading- This week we will continue focus on Author’s Point of View and Details.  In guided reading we will read about the Creek and Cherokee Indians. Please help your children remember to read their AR books and take their test. They have to have a 70% comprehension or higher to pass.  Many children are quickly reading a book and taking a test without comprehending it.  They end up making a low comprehension grade which effects their total comprehension score.

Social Studies- We will read about the Creek and Cherokee Indians and compare their lives to Georgians today. They will be tested on Friday.

Spelling/Phonics: Contractions. The words and homework will come home on Monday.

Grammar: Contractions

Math– This week we will learn 2 digit subtraction with regrouping.  We will also start working on word problems this 2 digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping.

  • Blast Off was sent home on Friday and is due this Friday. Don’t forget to use MobyMax-Fact Fluency as a way of practice.
  • The STEM Lab is looking for empty cereal boxes (please remove the bag and any crumbs inside). There will be a basket outside the STEM Lab for the boxes. We will be using them later this year for some designing challenges. Thank you ~ Ms. Marchelle.

The Fun Run was wonderful!! I loved seeing our class runners Brayden, Ela, Eva-Rose, Tyler, Prisha, Milo, and Ari.

Our learning focus:          

Reading- This week we will focus on Author’s Point of View and Details.  We will have many lessons this week and also work on this skill in guided reading. The children need to continue taking their AR test.  We go to the library as a class on Wednesdays but they are welcome to go in the mornings before school if needed.

Science- We will learn about the Changes that can occur on Earth by animals, people, weather, and plants.  This will also be our first informational writing.

Spelling/Phonics: oi words is our focus this week. The words and homework will come home on Monday.

Grammar: Contractions

Math: Adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with regrouping. Homework will come home on Tuesday and Thursday.

 

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off was sent home on Friday and is due this Friday. Don’t forget to use MobyMax-Fact Fluency as a way of practice.

Reading/Science-Informational stories and books will be our focus this 9 weeks. During reading, we will read about Energy-Motion/Pushes and Pulls.  There will be a test on Friday with a study guide coming home on Tuesday.  The children are required to take their 2 AR test by Friday.

Spelling/Phonics: There will be no spelling list this week.  Phonics homework on Monday.

Grammar: Possessive Nouns

Math: Adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers with regrouping. Blast off will be completed in school this week.  Continue to have your children practice their facts on MobyMax.

Reading- This week we will work on character problems and how they solved their problems. Remind your child to read and take their AR test during the week.  As a class, we go to the library every Wednesday but they are welcome to go any morning before the 7:50 bell.

Spelling/Phonics: Long e diagraphs:  ee, ey, ea.  Homework and words will come home on Monday.

Grammar: We will review nouns, common and proper, plural, irregular plural nouns, and collective nouns.

Written Expression– Narrative writing about our staycation or vacation over fall break.

Math: We will wrap up our money unit and review what we have discussed this 9 weeks.  Homework on Tuesday and Thursday night.

Science-What is matter? How can matter change? Homework on Wednesday night.

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off will be completed in class this week.
  • Thank you Tyler for the birthday treats! We are celebrating Emma’s birthday this week.

September 18-22

What a beautiful weekend!

Our learning focus: 

Reading- This week we will be back to our guided reading and language arts centers.  Please remind your children to read their library books during the week and take AR test on or before Friday. Many children are reading books Friday morning and taking their test.  They are to read during the week and try and have the test taken by Friday. Thanks for your help!!!

Spelling/Phonics: The lesson on long o diagraphs will be introduced on Monday and the words and homework will come home.  The children will have a test on Friday.

Grammar: Collective Nouns

Written Expression– Narrative writing about an adventure with a friend will be completed this week.

Math: Strategies will be completed and we will move into money. The focus is on pennies, nickels, and dimes but we will also touch on quarters.

Social Studies: On Monday, we will complete our study guide on government and send it home. The class will have a test on Wednesday. On Thursday. The children will work in groups to create their own country with rules and laws.

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off is due Friday.
  • 2 AR quizzes should be taken by Friday.
  • Our schedule will remain this way through Tuesday with lunch being 11:30-12:00 and specials 1:20-1:40.
  • Thank you to Ari’s parents for inviting the police officers to the class to talk about rules and laws.
  • Conference letters go out after fall break for the week of October 16. If you know a time that you would like please let me know ASAP.

9/13-9/15

I hope everyone stayed safe during our encounter with Irma!!

Our learning focus: 

Reading- We will continue to work with our book It’s Justin Time, Amber Brown.   We will discuss the story elements, vocabulary, and asking questions, along with character responses to problems.

Spelling/Phonics: We will not have spelling this week however we will talk about our vowel diagraphs for next with the long sound of o.

Grammar: This week we will introduce collective nouns.  These are deck of cards, heard of cows, flock of birds, etc.

Written Expression– Narrative writing about an adventure with a friend.

Math: We will review our strategies to learn our basic addition and subtraction facts; counting on, doubles and doubles plus one; fact families; making ten. Keep practicing basic facts on Mobymax and using flash cards.

Social Studies: Who are and what does the Mayor, Governor, and President do?

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off is due Friday.
  • Our lunch will be 11:30-12:00 and specials 1:20-1:40 for the remainder of this week. I’m not sure about next week.

September 5-8

I hope everyone had a relaxing Labor Day weekend!!!!

Our learning focus:

Reading- This week our shared reading is It’s Justin Time, Amber Brown. It’s a book about a birthday and friendship.  We will discuss the story elements, vocabulary, and asking questions.

Each child in second grade is required to read and take 2 AR test each week. Please help you child remember to do this and not wait until Friday to complete this assignment.  The children had time to read each morning before school and time during the school day. More than half the class waited until Friday to take their test. This week let’s take at least one test by Thursday.

Spelling/Phonics: This week we will focus on long a words.  The spelling words will come home Tuesday. Spelling homework will be Wednesday night. Please study these words with your child.  We will have a test on Friday.

Grammar: Irregular plural nouns

Written Expression-This week, we will write a story about our about an experience with their best friend.

Math: The children are skip counting, renaming numbers, and more practice with basic facts. It is so important that the children learn their basic facts.  Don’t forget about MobyMax to help with practicing their facts. Fact Fluency is the program they need to use for practice.

Social Studies This week we will discuss rules and laws.  We will begin learning about the duties of the President, Governor, and Mayor.

What else is going on?

  • Blast Off will be completed in class this week.
  • We will have Guidance on Thursday.
  • Our schedule will change on Wednesday, 9/6 to 9/15. Our lunch will be 11:30-12:00 and specials 1:20-1:40.
  • Parents-please send in dry erase markers. We use these marks all the time during math time. The children lose them and they dry out.  Thank you!!!
