Week of 10/29-11/2

My apologies for not updating the blog last week.  I had updated it, but apparently I didn’t schedule it to post.  So sorry!  Well, no need to focus on the past or what can’t be unchanged. We’ll just move on to this week.  This is going to be a crazy week with two field trips, but we’ll make it through just fine.  Here’s what we’ve got happening this week.

Math – this week, we will really begin to get into multiplication and division.  This week, we will be focusing on multiples of 10, 100, and 1,000.  We will also be working on rounding products, and multiplying multi-digits by 1 digit using a hands-on approach.  Please be sure to check out the Unit 2 videos from the county, as well as some of the videos that I have uncovered over the years and that I use in the class with the students.

Reading – This week, we will be focusing on the ELA standard RI 2 (Main Idea and Summarizing).  We would also love it if you were able to be a mystery reader on Wednesday.  If you would like to read to our class either in person or via Skype, we can make that happen.  We already have one special guest scheduled at 10:30, but I’m sure the students would love it if you were able to either come in and read a book of your choice or if you could read to us via skype.  Just let me know if you’re interested.  I’ll also be sending an email later today.

Writing – we will be working on writing an opinion piece.  We’ve started working on ways to come up with ideas for our opinion pieces.  This week, we will continue with “brain dumps” in which we create a story map and list out all of our “favorites.”  This week, we will also be participating in a “brain dump” on “I want…” and “take a stand.”  Hopefully by completing these “brain dumps,” the students will begin to get more excited about their writing.  We will also be working on setting goals for our writing.

Grammar – this week, the mentor sentence comes from the book Cloud Dance by Thomas Locker.  The focus for this mentor sentence is personification.  Personification is when in animate objects are given human characteristics.  For example, “The table jumped up and bit my leg.”  A table doesn’t have teeth, but when I write “the table jumped up and bit my leg,” helps me to understand that I bumped my leg.

Spelling – We will be having our next spelling test on Friday, 11/9/18.  Your student should be receiving their spelling lists on Monday.  If for some reason, your child didn’t receive his or hers, you may download it here.

Social Studies – this week, we will be reviewing for our upcoming Social Studies test, which will be Friday.  Your child should have brought home a study guide on Friday, but just in case they haven’t, please feel free to download a completed on the Social Studies page.

Science – this week, on Wednesday, we have a great opportunity for Ms. Melissa, our student teacher to create and lead a science lesson for us.  We will be doing a really cool Science activity on the various moon phases.

Monday, 10/29 – most of the students will be going to the Cobb Youth Museum
Tuesday, 10/30 – Mrs. Homer’s Heroes, plus a few more will be going on the Cobb Youth Museum field trip
Wednesday, 10/31 – Mystery Readers – please see Mrs. Poulos’ email
Thursday, 11/1 – Field Trip to see Willy Wonka on stage at South Cobb High School  – We are leaving at 7:50 on Thursday morning, so please be sure your student rides the bus or gets to school early.
Friday, 11/2 – Cherrydale Glow Party for qualifying orders
Tuesday, 11/6 – Teacher Work Day/Election Day – No school for Students
Friday, 11/9 – PTSA Movie Night – flyer sent home last week.
Monday, 11/19 – Friday, 11/23 – Thanksgiving Break – no school for students/teachers
