Week of 12/3/18

Only 14 more days until we are out for the Winter Holiday break.  We’ll have many fun, exciting days scheduled coming up these next few weeks.  Please be sure to check the blog and your child’s agenda regularly for any updates.  Well, there’s no time for chit chat, so let’s move on to what we have going on this week.

Math – this week, we will begin working on measuring the area of objects.  Since we have spent so much time working on multiplication, we shouldn’t have too much problem with this concept.  The hardest time the students typically have is with reading the actual problems and remembering to put the units of measure when they find the answer.  Once they understand the formula, A (Area) = L (length) X W (width), they usually do okay.  Today, we had a review of what we’ve been doing in class, due to my absence.  I will be back tomorrow and we’ll pick up there with area.

Reading – we are continuing to work on summarizing what we’re reading.  Many of us are also working on completing DRAs, to show how much we’ve improved this school year.  We will also be taking the Reading Inventory (RI) again next week to see how much our lexile levels have improved since the beginning of school.  Please be sure your students are reading for at least 20 minutes each night.  There will be a new reading log coming home tomorrow.

Writing – We are getting very close to finishing our first opinion masterpieces.  We should be getting ready to type by the end of this week or the beginning for next week.  We will be using Office 365, so your students will be able to pull up their masterpieces at home and let you read them.  If you have not already agreed to Office 365, please go into ParentVue and opt in.

Spelling – The students received their spelling contract for this week and next.  This will be the last contract of 2018.  We will not be having a spelling contract the week we get out of school for the break.  We will be working with these words for this week and next and we will be taking our Sort 8 test on Friday, 12/14. Grammar – This week’s mentor sentence comes from the book, Tikki, Tikki, Tembo, by Arlene Mosel.  This week’s grammar focus will be on compound sentences vs. simple sentences.  It’s my goal that the students will begin writing more compound sentences, instead of simple sentences.  Compound sentences typically have two subjects, two predicates, and express two completely independent clauses.  For example, “Don’t go near the well, or you’ll surely fall in.”  If you were to take out the comma and the conjunction, you would have two completely independent clauses, “Don’t go near the well.” and “You’ll surely fall in.”  This is why it’s considered a compound sentence.  The students will be expected to identify both simple sentences, as well as compound sentences on the quiz on Friday.

Social Studies – this week, we will be continuing our study on the constitution and the founding fathers of the constitution.  We will be having some fun with some augmented reality, as we use an app called Chatterpix to have the “Founding Fathers” talk and explain their roles in the New Nation.  We will also be completing structured notes on the Constitution and how it became what it is today.
