CTLS Backup Plan

Hello Soaring Eagles!

In the event of a district CTLS outage, or if you are unable to access our live session, our backup plan will always be to complete your FLIPGRID lesson/assignment during your music time. You should already have your FLIPGRID login codes. If you need your FLIPGRID login code, please contact Ms. Smith directly at katie.smith@cobbk12.org.

Make Your Own Instrument!

Happy Monday Soaring Eagles!

This week your assignment is to make your own musical instrument at home! Have you ever tried making a sound with a rubber band, or maybe a shaker instrument with some dry rice and a small container? Using materials you already have at home, create your own musical instrument. Please submit a short video  ( 1 minute or less) by Friday 5/1 to katie.smith@cobbk12.org. In the video, tell me what you have named your instrument, how you made it, and how it works! I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:

  • Learn about the instruments of the orchestra and their families! Help Violet and her Uncle Ollie journey through the jungle to collect all the instruments. Learn fun facts about the brass, woodwind, string and percussion families and listen to what each instrument sounds like:  https://listeningadventures.carnegiehall.org/index.aspx (no login needed, select local game, then new game)
  •  Explore musical form with https://www.incredibox.com/ Create your very own song or beat with several different themes! Record your song and share it with your family.
  • Review rhythms and note names on https://www.musictheory.net/lessons .
  • Parents: Your 3rd-5th student should be practicing recorder at home daily for at least 10 minutes. When you encourage your student to practice, they will be more prepared for class and feel excited about their accomplishments. We use the “Recorder Express” book weekly in class (Click HERE to Order book). Students learn songs which correlate to “karate belts” to show mastery of particular songs. Their progress is factored into their report card grade:
Hot Cross Buns p.5 -White Belt
Merrily We Roll Along p.6- Yellow Belt
Au Claire De La Lune p.5- Orange Belt
    Hallelujah Chorus p.12-Green Belt
    Harmonious Buns p.13- Blue Belt
    Lightly Row p.14- Purple Belt
    Andante p.16- Red Belt
    Cobbler’s Song p.18- Brown Belt
Theme From Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony p.25-Black Belt
Red River Valley p.26- White Bead
    Amazing Grace p.28- Yellow Bead
    Alouette p.27- Orange Bead
The Wedding March p.30- Green Bead
Polly Wolly Doodle p.32- Blue Bead
Take Me Out to the Ball Game p.36 – Purple Bead
    Can Can p.46- Red Bead
    Ronde p.46- Brown Bead
    Irish Washerwoman p.46- Black Bead
Tips for helping your student at home:
Use the fingering chart in the back of the book (black holes should be pressed)
Use the staff diagram in the front of the book
99% of issues arise because your student is blowing too hard into the instrument. Students should blow gently and covered holes should be all the way covered.
Please let me know if you have any questions!

  • Should you have questions or need help, my digital office hours are 9am-10:30am, M-F, via email katie.smith@cobbk12.org.

Kindergarten Musical

You’re invited to our kindergarten musical “Sing Through the Year” on May 9th at 8:15am in the Sope Creek Cafeteria. Our kindergartners are so excited to show you what they’ve been working on in music class. Hope to see you there!

Technology in Music!

Hello Parents!

Our music class at Sope Creek will be using FLIPGRID on a regular basis to share learning with parents and collaborate with peers. Please download the free app FLIPGRID and follow these steps:

  1. Download the app FLIPGRID
  2. Enter Grid Code: sopecreekmusic
  3. Select Log in with Microsoft
  4. Enter your students SCHOOL email and password which is their firstname.lastname@students.cobbk12.org password: 123
  5. Select the appropriate topic to complete and record your videos!

Also, another recommend app for at home practice on musical form is INCREDIBOX. Your student will love this! This app is $3.99 and is optional, but so cool! The website version on a desktop is free, but the app is easier to navigate and has more features. I hope you enjoy these fun technology resources at home!
