Pumpkins and Bats

This month our students are learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin and listening to a story about a bat who is searching for her family after becoming lost.  In therapy, the students are working on comprehension questions, vocabulary, following directions, Venn diagram, descriptive words, story retell, articulation practice and sequencing events from the story.  Our book is Stellaluna by Janell Cannon.

September- Let’s talk like a Pirate, ARGH

Ahoy Mateys! This month in Speech we are learning ALL about Pirates, using two of our favorite Pirate books: “Pirates Go to School” for K-2 groups, and “How I Became a Pirate” for grades 3-5. We are focusing on vocabulary, similarities/differences, adjectives, pronouns, sentence structure, identifying story elements, story retell, sequencing, articulation and other objectives to address our students Speech-Language skills! If your child has returned their folder, folders will be going home at the end of the month for September. Please remove your child’s papers and return the folder in October so that we can fill them up with more Speech-Language activities!

August is All About Me And Solar Eclipse

This month we will get to know our students, discuss therapy goals and therapy classroom expectations.  As the exciting solar eclipse approaches, we will spend time learning about what happens, the dangers of looking at the eclipse, learn vocabulary words, answer WH questions, use adjectives to describe and listen to a story about an eclipse.  We are looking forward to an exciting month!


Welcome to what is bound to be an AMAZING year of Speech at Pitner Elementary!  Mrs. van der Heijden and Mrs. Tomberlain will be working as a team to provide fun and effective therapy to  Pitner students.  Speech folders will be sent home at the end of the month, containing your child’s work over the month.  Please return the folder after you have a chance to remove your child’s completed work.  Speech Progress Reports will be sent home at the same time as report cards, at the end of each nine week period.  We are looking forward to a FUN-FILLED school year, where our voyage to excellence begins with improved Speech and Language skills!
