Student Information Form

We had such a great time at the Fernbank Museum!! Thanks to the parents that chaperoned. We couldn’t have done it without your help!

Yesterday, you received your child’s pre-printed registration card for the 2018-2019 school year. These forms are due back by Monday, April 16th. Please check the information on the card, make necessary changes, and be sure to sign the back. Please note on the registration card if your child will not be returning to East Side next year. Thank you!

Fernbank Field Trip

Tomorrow is our Fernbank Field Trip! Please make sure you dress accordingly for the weather and wear tennis shoes. If you are bringing a lunch from home, EVERYTHING has to be disposable (including water bottles and containers). If your child does not have a disposable lunch, they will have to purchase a school lunch. You need to write on the lunch bag your child’s name and Ms. Taylor. If your child is buying a lunch from school, I will write their name and my name on the bag. Be sure to wear your blue class t-shirt. If you have lost it, please wear a royal blue t-shirt. Thank you!

Gimme 5 and Report Cards

East Side and the rest of Cobb County is beginning the “Gimme 5 for Education” campaign to raise funds for the Cobb County Schools Foundation. This is a great way to invest in Cobb County students and teachers! This campaign provides grants for teachers, scholarships for students, and much more! Did you know that this money helped purchased some equipment for the MakerSpace (3D printers)? We have even had one of our own first grade teachers lucky enough to receive one of the grants several years ago. The Cobb Schools Foundation is the only non-profit organization that supports all of our schools, staff, and students in the Cobb County School District. Some of the money you donate will come straight back to East Side which is great! An envelope for donations will be coming home on Monday, March 19! Please make consider making at least a $5 tax-deductible contribution and return it in the given envelope before April 13, 2018! You can also donate online at https://4agc.com/donation_pages/bd85d325-bdfd-40ee-bce5-d4d4dd187714?referral_page_id=e68e06ab-db7e-49e1-926e-6988b4602ae4&referral_page_type=LandingPage. Don’t forget that this is tax-deductible and the Tax ID is #58-2487501. Thanks for your support!

Report cards are coming home today! You can keep the report card that is inside. Please sign on the orange line and return the envelope unsealed. Thank you!

Shapes Study Guide

Next week for homework you will be given a Shapes Study Guide. We are working on 2D Shapes this week and 3D Shapes next week. On the test, they are expected to know the shape attributes (sides, angles, faces, edges, and vertices). A 2D shape is easy to determine when you see it in a picture, but a 3D shape is hard to count when you see it in a picture. I’d recommend memorizing these attributes over the next two weeks! We will test on 2D and 3D shapes before Spring Break! Here is a digital copy if you want to get started this week! Shapes Study Guide-25i4jf2

On March 15th, she will be sharing her book with us and discussing the process of how she got her book published.

You can buy an autographed, hardback copy of The Matter of the Moo Cow for $14.95 at www.Etsy.com. Just search for “Matter of the Moo Cow” at Etsy.com! The books will be here by the 15th!

Typing

Ms. Alter, our computer lab instructor, asks that students practice their typing skills.  Please practice typing for 10 minutes a day for 5 days a week.  For 2nd grade, students, she recommends either Dancemat, a free typing lesson tutorial.  Students need to learn how to use all 10 fingers when typing.  If students practice incorrectly, it only creates a bad habit.  To help against this bad habit, she suggests using a towel over your hands.  In the lab, students have skins over our keyboard when they practice typing.  Dancemat is self-explanatory and the program tells you what you need to do.  Once they have completed the lessons in this way to learn the keyboard and proper finger placement.  Then they should do the lessons again and this time focus on the speed recommended by the program. You can find Dancemat and other typing tutorials on our computer lab webpage at http://www.eastsidetechnology.org/?page_id=28.  Thanks for your help.

Fire Safety Village Field Trip

Monday is our Fire Safety Village Field Trip! Please make sure you dress accordingly for the weather and wear tennis shoes. If you are bringing a lunch from home, EVERYTHING has to be disposable (including water bottles and containers). We will have to throw everything away before leaving to come back to the school. You need to write on the lunch bag your child’s name and Ms. Taylor. If your child is buying a lunch from school, I will write their name and my name on the bag. Be sure to wear your blue class t-shirt. If you have lost it, please wear a royal blue t-shirt. Thank you!

Also, don’t forget to bring a lunch from home or you can buy a sack lunch from the cafeteria. We will not eat lunch until we return to school around 1:00 P.M. It is important that everyone brings a snack to eat before we load on the buses at 9:45 A.M.

Upcoming Reminders

Our school is beyond blessed to be having a visit from Jane O’Connor, author of the amazing Fancy Nancy books next Thursday, February 8th!  We are so excited that our school is getting this opportunity to experience a children’s book author in person!  To help spread our excitement AND show our appreciation and enthusiasm for Ms. O’Connor, we are asking that all students K-3, dress “fancy” next Thursday—you are more than welcome to use some Fancy Nancy books as inspiration!

Picture day is this Thursday, February 1st. Please do not wear green because you will blend in with the green screen background! 🙂 If you want to order class pictures or individual pictures, turn in the envelope that morning. Thank you!

Fancy Nancy Orders

We are not accepting any more checks for the Fancy Nancy book orders. If you have already submitted it, we have received it. If you would still like to order, you may do so using this link. Thanks!

On Friday, January 26th, I am requesting that the students dress up like they are 100 years old for our 100th day of school! Due to scheduling conflicts, we will be celebrating in class in lieu of a parade.

We are going to do many fun Math and Writing enrichment activities related to the way we are dressed and to the number “100”. There is no need to buy new items. Allow your child to get creative with what you already have at home!

I appreciate your help with putting together an outfit for them. I can’t wait to see all my little old men and women!
