January 21-25, 2019 Bundle Up For the Cold Weather!

PARENTS!  IT’S COLD OUTSIDE!—PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD WEARS A WARM COAT TO SCHOOL ON THESE COLD WINTER DAYS!—WE  LOVE TO GO OUTSIDE  TO RECESS FOR FRESH AIR AND EXERCISE ON THE DAYS THAT THE OUTDOOR TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 45 degrees.   HOWEVER, YOUR CHILD MAY STILL NEED A COAT, HAT, AND OR GLOVES FOR THE PLAYGROUND.

***ALSO, OUR ROOM IS ALWAYS COZY, HOWEVER, SOME STUDENTS COMPLAIN OF BEING COLD DURING CLASS.–PLEASE SEND A SWEATER, LIGHT JACKET, SWEATSHIRT, OR HOODIE FOR YOUR CHILD IN CASE THEY MAY NEED ONE FOR CLASS!–IT MAY BE A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE THEM KEEP IT IN THEIR BOOK BAG, “JUST IN CASE”!

INFO. ABOUT TARDIES OR LATE  SCHOOL ARRIVALS:

  • PLEASE BE SURE THAT YOUR CHILD ARRIVES AT SCHOOL WELL BEFORE THE BELL RINGS AT 7:45 EACH MORNING. EACH STUDENT NEEDS TO HAVE TIME TO UNPACK THEIR BOOKBAG AND GET READY FOR THE DAY WITHOUT RUSHING.
  • IF YOUR CHILD ARRIVES AFTER 8:00 EACH MORNING THEY ARE MISSING THEIR MATH LESSON AND WILL MISS IMPORTANT MATH SKILLS THAT THEY SHOULD KNOW!
  • IF YOUR CHILD EATS BREAKFAST AT SCHOOL, HE/SHE SHOULD ARRIVE NO LATER THAN 7:30 SO THEY CAN  REPORT TO CLASS AND THEN HAVE TIME TO GO BREAKFAST!—–THE BREAKFAST LINE STOPS WHEN THE BELL RINGS AT 7:45!
  • PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THE SCHOOL BUSES ARE NEVER LATE TO SCHOOL AND YOUR CHILD WILL ALWAYS ARRIVE IN PLENTY OF TIME TO UNPACK AND GET READY FOR THE DAY WITHOUT RUSHING.—Please consider the bus as an option!
  • REMEMBER, THE CAR POOL LINE IS VERY LONG EVERY MORNING, SO PLEASE PLAN FOR THAT SO THAT YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE LATE.—Car pool arrivals after 7:45 are considered “tardy”.

 INFO. ABOUT STUDENT ABSENCES:

  • EVERY TIME YOUR CHILD IS ABSENT, PARENTS MUST SEND IN AN EXCUSE FOR THAT ABSENCE WITHIN 3 SCHOOL DAYS.—EVERY TIME, REGARDLESS OF THE REASON FOR THE ABSENCE!—The schools are required to keep up with student absences.  It is part of your child’s record.– If your child has 3 or more unexcused absences at any time throughout the entire school year, parents will be notified.

THIS WEEK:

Mon., Jan. 21—MLK Day—NO SCHOOL TODAY.

LOOKING AHEAD:

February 18-22:   Winter Break—NO SCHOOL ALL THIS WEEK.

January 14-18, 2019 Back in the SWING of things!

We are in the second half  of 1st Grade and are working hard to get ready for 2nd Grade next year.  For the last half of the school year the curriculum with become more rigorous and expectations will be higher.  That means that students may need to spend a little more time at home doing homework or practicing their  200 Sight Words and Math Flashcards.  I know that every parent wants their child to be prepared for next year.  PLEASE REMEMBER TO CHECK YOUR CHILD’S FOLDER EACH DAY AND BE SURE TO READ THE HOMEWORK SHEET EVERY DAY TO SEE WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AT HOME THAT WEEK!   Many thanks for your extra help at home in advance.

IMPORTANT!    2ND QUARTER REPORT CARDS WERE SENT HOME IN FOLDERS THIS PAST FRIDAY!  THE LONG SHEET IS THE REPORT CARD WITH GRADES ON THE FRONT AND TEACHER COMMENTS ON THE BACK!    PLEASE REVIEW YOUR CHILD’S REPORT CARD AND KEEP FOR YOUR RECORDS AT HOME.—-THEN, SIGN THE CHECKED LINE ON THE WHITE ENVELOPE AND RETURN TO SCHOOL THIS WEEK.—Please do not seal the envelope because it will be used again.

THIS WEEK:

—WOW!    No special events are planned for this week!   This will be a great week of uninterrupted instruction and learning new skills.–WE ARE WORKING HARD TO BECOME GREAT STUDENTS AND TO GET READY FOR 2ND GRADE NEXT YEAR!

5 MINUTES EACH NIGHT—-HELP YOUR CHILD TO LEARN  THE 200 SIGHT WORD LIST WITH YOUR CHILD.—STUDENTS SHOULD NOT BE STUDYING WORDS BY THEMSELVES;  THEY DON’T KNOW THE WORDS AND NEED ADULT ASSISTANCE!  GIVE ABOUT 10 NEW WORDS EACH WEEK AND STUDY UNTIL THEY KNOW THOSE WORDS “in a snap”.  Then, give 10 more..—THEY NEED EXTRA PRACTICE AT HOME WITH YOU TO ASSURE THAT THEY LEARN AS MANY WORDS AS POSSIBLE BEFORE SCHOOL ENDS.

15 MINUTES EVERY NIGHT IF POSSIBLE—READ!   We are working on fluency and comprehension skills that will help us understand what we have read and be able to retell the story!—YOUR CHILD SHOULD NOT BE READING BY THEMSELVES, BUT WITH AN ADULT WHO CAN ASSIST THEM WHEN THEY MISCALL A WORD OR GET STUCK ON A WORD THEY DO NOT KNOW!

5 MINUTES EACH NIGHT–MATH BASIC ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION FACTS—Practice about 5 new facts every day.—Addition 1st, then Subtraction.—I asked back in the fall for parents to get some Flashcards or make some from index cards.–Start with  the 3s, 4s, 5s, ….  All the way up to the 9s. —Give about 5 cards at a time.—Put a check on the card each time your child can immediately give the fact–Give a new card when they have 5 checks on the card, but go back and practice the old cards.–**YES, WE ARE STILL LEARNING STRATEGIES, BUT IT WILL BE VERY HELPFUL FOR YOUR CHILD TO KNOW THEIR FACTS BY RECALL, WHEN THEY ENTER 2ND GRADE NEXT YEAR BECAUSE THEY WILL BE USING NUMBERS INTO THE HUNDREDS AND ADDING AND SUBTRACTING WITH REGROUPING.

 LOOKING AHEAD:

–MONDAY, JAN. 21—-NEXT MONDAY— NO SCHOOL! —- MLK HOLIDAY.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Mon., Jan. 21—MLK HolidayNO SCHOOL

IMPORTANT—–PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD!

There are 3 things that parents need to help their students with that MUST BE PRACTICED AT HOME:

  1.  200 Sight Word List DAILYThis is the same list that I have been referring to all year, so parents should already be doing these at home. ** YOUR CHILD NEEDS TO KNOW HOW TO SAY ALL 200 WORDS  “in a snap” BY MAY AT THE LATEST, BUT THEY WILL BE GRADED ON ALL 200 WORDS AT THE END OF THIS 3RD QUARTER. I WILL BE SENDING THAT LIST HOME AGAIN.—PLEASE PRACTICE THESE WORDS DAILY.
  1. READING 15-20 MINUTES DAILY.—**Students should already be reading at least 3 times per week, so this is not a new assignment.-This means your child is reading to you and you are listening to them read so you can assist them!  YOUR CHILD SHOULD NOT BE READING BY HIMSELF OR HERSELF.  REMEMBER THEY ARE BEGINNING READERS!—This practice is very important to improve fluency and comprehension.
  1. MATH BASIC ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION FACTS—Practice about 5 new facts every day.—Addition 1st, then Subtraction..I asked back in the fall for parents to get some Flashcards or make some from index cards.Start with  the 3s, 4s, 5s, ….  All the way up to the 9s. —Give about 5 cards at a time.—Put a check on the card each time your child can immediately give the fact–Give a new card when they have 5 checks on the card, but go back and practice the old cards.–**YES, WE ARE STILL LEARNING STRATEGIES, BUT IT WILL BE VERY HELPFUL FOR YOUR CHILD TO KNOW THEIR FACTS BY RECALL, WHEN THEY ENTER 2ND GRADE NEXT YEAR.
