10.30.17 – 11.3.17

This week in Drama:

All three grade levels come into class daily and have the first 10 minutes to work on their quarter-long Vocabulary project. Please encourage your student to stay on top of these terms as the final project is worth a Performance Grade at the end of the quarter.

6th graders are performing their Pantomimed scenes in the early part of the week.  Then, we will move into exploring Performance Anxiety and Audience Etiquette.

7th graders are exploring how different audiences behave at different types of venues.  We will do a quick study of Performance Anxiety and learn a few techniques to help with stage fright before moving into Dialogue.

8th graders are assigning roles and responsibilities for their musicals.  They will then begin to develop characters and stories, and write their scripts.

This week in Broadcasting:

This week we will study Journalism Ethics and the importance of accuracy in journalism.  After that, we will try to tell the difference between fake news and real news.  After that, we will begin our study of different journalists in history.

All Broadcasting students have been assigned a “B-roll” assignment.  They must collect video footage from an event here at Durham and edit the footage into a 30 second piece to air on our morning news.  They will also need to write a script for our anchors to read to go along with the B-roll.  This video is not due until December 8th, but students should not wait until then to turn it in.  They are welcome to collect footage, edit, and turn it in any time between now and then.  Because of the amount of time given for this assignment, no extensions will be given and failure to turn in a B-roll piece by Friday, December 8th will result in a grade of zero for this video project.  Thank you for understanding.

10.23.17 – 10.27.17

This week in Drama:

6th graders will begin the week being introduced to Pantomime.  They will then be given an assignment where they have to write a 12 step pantomime, rehearse, and then perform it in front of the class.

7th graders created their charts for the History of Theater gallery walk.  We plan to complete those graphic organizers on Monday and move into other things.  Among the things to cover:  Compare/Contrast Theater to other fine arts, relaxation and breathing techniques, and audience etiquette.

8th graders are finishing their introduction to Broadway musicals.  This week, the teams will be announced and teams will begin to explore song selections and role responsibilities.

This week in Broadcasting:

Students have learned the proper way to give and receive constructive criticism.  They are still reviewing the completed videos.  After that, we will move into exploring B roll before starting new video projects.

10.16.17 – 10.20-17

This week in Drama:
Being conference week, our class periods are shortened this week. However, we are doing our best to cover as much material as we can in the shortened amount of time.

All three grade levels have set up their vocabulary folders and are prepared to begin defining terms for their quarter-long Vocabulary project. Please encourage your student to stay on top of these terms as the final project is worth a Performance Grade at the end of the quarter.

6th graders are starting their week with an understanding of the history of theater. Then, we’ll move into Pantomime.

7th graders are working on completing graphic organizers about different time periods in theatrical history. They will have a gallery walk by the end of the week.

8th graders have begun to be introduced to Broadway Musicals. This week we are watching clips from DVDs that help explain how the musical became synonymous with Broadway. After that, they’ll move into beginning to produce their own musicals.

This week in Broadcasting:
Students begin the week by completing peer reviews on the team members they had on their last video project. We will then explore constructive criticism a bit before watching and critiquing their finalized videos.

10.9.17 – 10.13.17

This week in Drama:

We have all new students in Drama with this week being the beginning of a new quarter.

All three grade levels will spend the first few days understanding the syllabus and getting ready for a great quarter.

6th graders will then rehearse and perform some skits just to “get their feet wet” in the acting world.  By the end of the week, we will begin to study the history of theater as a whole.

7th graders will begin the 9 weeks with improvisational skits performed through classroom games. They also will finish the week with an introduction to the history of theater.

8th graders will jump right into techniques they need to know about writing a play.  They will perform a short “Welcome to the World of Theater” skit and will move into the history of Broadway musicals by the end of the week.

This week in Broadcasting:

Students are editing their recently filmed pieces.  They will turn the finished videos in by Wednesday, at which time we will complete peer reviews and critique the finished videos.

10.2.17-10.6.17

This week in Drama:
The vocabulary folder projects have been turned in. Students are allowed a “second chance” to correct errors and receive half credit for the things that were left out of the project. Last chance to turn them in is Friday, October 6th.

6th graders are learning about Puppetry this week. They will rehearse and perform puppet shows by the end of the week.

7th graders are performing their developed stories as a performance grade in the Storytelling unit.

8th graders are being introduced to William Shakespeare. They will be rehearsing and performing a middle school version of Romeo and Juliet in the classroom.

This week in Broadcasting:
Students are filming new video projects. By the end of the week they should be in the editing phase of production.
