Week of January 28th

This week we will be focusing on sequencing and starting a new book “The Snowy Day”.

We have lots of fun activities planned including making our own “snow” and a snowball fight! We will work on fine motor skills through sorting snowballs by sizes and tracing lines and shapes on our “snow”.

We will also begin our Social Studies unit on famous Americans. We will be reading “Looking at Lincoln” and identifying the many characteristics of Abraham Lincoln.

We will continue to work on our word of the month “in” and encourage families to continue having your students practice putting items in containers. There are so many daily living skills that can involve putting things in from laundry to cooking. Have your students help put ingredients in dinner this week or items in the laundry basket.

Teachers will have daily discussions, read stories, and watch short video clips about showing kindness, inclusion, and respect.

Additionally, we will show kindness in our community by hosting a toiletries drive to benefit The Center for Children and Young Adults AND SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center. With the help of our Student Council, we will be collecting items such as shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, etc. These items will go to children in our community.

Week of December 17, 2018

This week is a going to be a fun filled week in Pod A. We are busy wrapping up our unit for December. We are reading Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett and discussing Holidays around the world.

Our CBI trip was cancelled due to the delayed start of school last Tuesday. We are rescheduling it for the month of January and will send home permission forms again after break.

Our class would like to invite parents and family to come in this week to be a mystery reader. The students love seeing their family in the classroom and it is even better when it is a surprise!  You may bring in one of your favorite holiday books to read to the class and a small treat if you would like. This will take the place of a class winter party as we have limited space in our classroom and it can be overwhelming having a lot of people in our class at once.

*If your family has a special tradition you celebrate in December please share with us as we would love to incorporate it into our lessons!*

We were also busy sequencing the items from the story “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bell”.

Sequencing is a great way for students to work on their comprehension and math skills. We used many sensory items during centers this week to reinforce our literacy and math.

Next Tuesday is our Community Based Instruction trip to Publix. We are busy planning our cooking recipes and grocery lists. The students will be practicing their social and communication skills as well as sorting the items on our list. We are very excited to get out into the community.
